Terror & Tears

Chapter 57

When Darrell returned from the crime scene, the Captain met him at the elevator doors. Darrell walked out of the elevator and went to sit at his desk.

“Oh no you don’t.” The Captain grabbed Darrell’s arm and pulled him toward the press room. “You have a press conference to give. Everyone is getting set and you get to tell the world that this bastard has been stopped.”

Darrell stood and stared at his boss. “What? We don’t even have a confirmation that William Deveraux was the killer. Who called the press conference?” Darrell looked at the Captain with a bit of disdain.

“I did and you will give it and you will tell the public that this case is closed. The mayor and his office have managed to keep the city from exploding so we can help by putting this away. We can worry about technicalities later. Right now we need a release, and you are going to provide it. This city needs to take a breath.” The captain looked serious and Darrell knew that look from the past couple of days.

“I suppose I can say that we have caught the killer, but I won’t give names until we are certain of the identity.” Darrell stood looking at the Captain.

He nodded his head “Deal!” Darrell nodded also and then went to the washroom to check out his appearance and clean up a little before the cameras captured this moment in infamy.

About half an hour later, Darrell stood in front of the crowd of cameras and news reporters waiting for them to get quiet so he could start.

In a matter of seconds the room became still and a pin could have been heard if one dropped.

“Thank you for coming ladies and gentlemen. We, the police, the FBI, the mayor and his office are here to tell you that as of 4:45pm today, Thursday September 25th, we have caught the Industrial Park Killer.”

The room erupted in a cacophony of noise and Darrell again waited until the reporters quieted down.

“Again, I say we have caught the Industrial Park Killer, and due to circumstances the suspect is deceased. I will not be taking any questions as of yet; however, we want the public to know that we consider the case closed and although the investigation is still open, there are no suspects wanted at this time and we are confident in saying that a great weight has been lifted from the city and we can all get back to business as usual. We would like to thank everyone for their cooperation and we want to give our heartfelt condolences for all those who have fallen victim to this killer. We will follow up when we can discuss more details. Thank you for your time.”

Darrell backed away from the microphones and stepped off the platform into the crowd of reporters. He walked amidst a constant stream of questions and microphones as he left the room to start the paperwork that was going to be his next few days.
