Terror & Tears
Chapter 16
Gayle was sitting at her desk watching the activity. She was in awe. Everyone seemed to know what to do and how to do it. There was a low buzz in the air and Gayle found it intoxicating as well as calming. There was never this kind of atmosphere in Organized Crime. As she watched the chaotic patterns, she had a thought. “Bingo” she shouted and stood up. Gayle ran over to find Darrell. He wasn’t around. She looked for him and spotted him over by the IPK Task Force door.
“Darrell!” She said loudly as she raced over to see him.
“I figured it out!” She said quickly “I figured out why he is using the industrial park as the dump site.” Gayle looked at Darrell and waited somewhat impatiently for him to answer her.
“OK. so are you gonna tell me or are you gonna make me guess?” Darrell taunted Gayle.
“Well it is simple once you stop thinking like a cop and think like a perp. Why would you dump a person in a huge field? You want the body to be found, you want the media to see it and you want the attention.”
“Well we know all of that, so what is the big breakthrough Gayle?”
“It is like this. The perp is looking for all the attention he can get. He is taunting us. He is looking for acknowledgement of the crime. Like he is doing a huge public service. We know there is common link between the women. That’s how our perp is finding these girls; we just need to find it. ” Gayle took a breath and looked at Darrell for his opinion. She was getting impatient.
“Yes and we are already doing that. What else do you have?” Darrell asked her.
“That’s it. I wasn’t really thinking about anything. I was just watching all the chaos in the squad room and that’s when it hit me. Completely oblivious to what was going on.” Gayle felt a little deflated.
“Well Gayle, you can go over and let the FBI know what you think, but we already are aware of this and are looking for a connection between the victims. Yes we need to catch up, that is part of being a detective here in homicide.” Darrell didn’t mean to sound harsh or petty. He was impatient that he had to explain this basic technique of every investigation regardless of the kind of crime you were investigating.
As they walked into the IPK Task Force room, both Gayle and Darrell noticed that everyone was still and quiet. It was such an unsettling silence that when the two detectives walked into the room every head turned and looked at them.
“We were just about to go over the profile of our unknown subject or UNSUB. Please join us.” Agent Gatsburg said.
Gayle and Darrell took their seats and listened to the profile.
Agent Gatsburg started “Our UNSUB is a white male, professional and very organized. He lives in an isolated area or on a substantial piece of property where he can hold his victims and do the things he does to them with no one being able to see or hear anything. This man is socially obscure and lacking most normal social skills. He is an only child, devoted to his father. His mother left the home when he was young and his father was a misogynistic perfectionist who passed down these traits to his son, whom he doted over. This UNSUB sees women merely as pawns in the game of life and treats them as such.”
“The UNSUB likely works in a field that sets high standards and has several rules and regulations. This gives our guy the satisfaction in his daily life that affords him comfort.” Agent Tallon continued, “He is likely a Supervisor or Manager of his chosen field. He has an extensive knowledge of human anatomy which leads us to believe that he either works in the medical field or has had substantial training. While our UNSUB is committing his crimes he is highly focused and meticulous. He takes pride in his work and he makes sure that we know this, by placing objects or things underneath the bodies. These items mean something to him and he is sure we know what they mean too. Our UNSUB has specific targets and we are unsure at this time where all of the victims overlap. He also covers his tracks by knowing how we collect evidence. The only body part that is not left at the scene is the uterus. He is collecting them for a specific purpose. We are going to put Detective Darker as our point man, he will be doing all the interviews with the media, our UNSUB needs to see that Darrell is the main man. This will add a kind of camaraderie between the UNSUB and the Police. ”
Gayle nodded in agreement. It seemed that the FBI agents had the same thoughts as her.
“We have our analyst looking through the victims’ lives to see where their paths have crossed. We are certain all these girls have something in common; we just need to find it. If you have any thoughts or questions, please find a member of our team and we can work it out. Thanks for listening and good hunting.” Agent Tallon finished speaking and then went to see Gayle and Darrell.
“Thanks for coming in. I was gonna get one of the Officers to go and get you when you both walked in.”
“I actually had the same thought about all the victims being tied together somehow. I just wish I could figure that out.” Gayle said to the Agent.
“We will figure it out. We have our Team Analyst on it and he is phenomenal at finding hidden strings.” Agent Tallon finished.
